Podcasting is basically blogging but using audio recordings instead of writing. To do a podcast you can use the same software platform that you use for a blog. We prefer WordPress on your own web host. WordPress can be used for blogging, podcasting using either audio and/or video. Another solution is Joomla, which is a full blown Content Management System.

The record audio for a podcast you need a audio recording/editing software. And the good news Audacity is a professional audio pakage available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux - and is 100% free and downloadable from the sourceforge website. Then you'll need a microphone, those comes in various qualities and prices, but you can get a great microphone for around $100. If you plan to record interviews you should consider a mixer and one more microphone.
If you are planning to do interview havinf the person interviewed on the phone you should look at Skype, a good USB headset with microphone and a call recording software like Pamela fro Windows and Audio HiJack Pro or WireTap for the Macintosh.
To do a video podcast a great device to capture video is a FlipVideo, it will hold one hour of video and makes some decent video. When recording you have to fairly close as you will alway want to have your microphone as close to the source for optimum audio quality. The Flip comes with editing software which is very easy to use. If you want to do higher quality video you'll need a camcorder that will record 30 fps and shooting progressive.
